Why join the Children's University?

The Children’s University is a very successful national organisation offering children aged 7-14 an exciting and innovative programme of high quality learning opportunities outside school hours, with a focus on rewarding participation, raising aspirations and encouraging engagement with learning.  The strength of the Children’s University is its flexibility to meet local needs through local centres, underpinned by a rigorous quality assurance procedure and the support of a national organisation, the Children’s University Trust.

Once your child becomes a member of the Children’s University, they are encouraged to progress through the national certification scheme, based on their number of hours of attendance throughout their involvement with the Children’s University. Bronze, silver and gold certificates are awarded at CU Undergraduate, CU Postgraduate and CU Doctorate levels, rewarding participation in CU learning from 30 to 1000 hours. Honorary certificates are also awarded for outstanding achievement and commitment. We are working closely with Plymouth University and every year they provide a formal graduation ceremony for young people, free of charge, when they have participated in 100 or more hours of learning.

What is the cost?

Children log their learning hours in the Children’s University passport, these can be purchased from Mrs Green through the school office for £2.50. Please remember if you are eligible for pupil premium you can join the CU for free.

What activities can be used to earn CU hours?

Any activities already offered out of school hours can be ‘validated’ as Children’s University modules, as long as learning and skill development is taking place.

The range of activities which can be included is very wide: from gardening and nature trails, to dance workshops and cooking clubs. Once an activity provider has been validated they will be given a sticker to display, so students will know where they can collect stamps from.

If you wish to nominate a Learning Destination which is not yet validated, please contact Torbay Children’s University:

On Friday 4th December 2015, Mrs Kendell and Mrs Green hosted a special celebration afternoon for the children who had achieved a Gold Award in the Children's University. Each child chose a friend to accompany them and it was a baking/crafting Christmas party!

The children made and decorated cupcakes, decorated their own Christmas snowmen, had crackers and played pass the parcel. They had a wonderful time!
